Questions to Ask Providers

Questions to Ask a Pet Insurance Provider

It’s common knowledge that pets are expensive. Whether a 12-week puppy or a 13-year-old cat, pets are inquisitive and curious and can get themselves into trouble. So many people are choosing pet health insurance to cover high costs associated with veterinary care that arises from these actions.

But when comparing pet insurance companies, there are certain questions to ask. Pet insurance companies are not created equal and many have hidden fees and a long list of restrictions that may not be apparent in the beginning. It’s important to read the fine print and be completely aware of what will and will not be covered.

Here is a list of some of the questions the American Animal Hospital Association suggests you should ask when comparing cat and dog insurance:

  1. How does this provider handle renewals? (Example: If my pet is diagnosed with hip dysplasia one year, is that problem considered a chronic or pre-existing condition when the policy comes up for renewal?)
  2. Are there any complaints about this provider on record at the Better Business Bureau?
  3. Does this provider have good ratings at independent websites that review and/or publish customer ratings of pet health insurance companies?
  4. Are this provider and the person selling the insurance licensed in my state/province?
  5. Does this provider offer high-deductible policies?
  6. Does this provider offer a money-back, trial period for new subscribers?
  7. Does this provider exclude coverage for pets the same species, breed and age as mine?
  8. Did this provider respond quickly and thoroughly when I requested more information?

While it’s important to ask these questions to each pet insurance company, it’s also important to read pet insurance reviews and discuss with a vet who he or she recommends.
